Reliable sources in Hawai'i report that PrepStar All-American outside linebacker/safety Shaydon Akuna, from Kapolei, Hawai'i, will play college ball at Oregon State. Shaydon visited Oregon State on the weekend of October 10th, and has since visited Florida State on January 30th, Arizona on January 23rd and Oregon on January 20th. He has also shown interest in Arizona State, Arkansas, Hawai'i, UCLA, Southern Cal and West Virginia.
Shaydon is 6-3, weighs at least 205 pounds, and has been timed at 4.52 seconds in the forty-yard dash. Powerful, he bench-presses 405 pounds and squats 525 pounds. He has an outstanding thirty-six inch vertical jump and has been timed at 4.15 seconds in the short shuttle.
Akuna not only has exceptional technique, but is a powerful tackler. He has a large frame that will permit him to add more weight. Videotape reveals a powerful athlete, but faces work to improve his flexibility. His tackles, on videotape, are so brutal that they have caused some viewers to wince. PAC-10 offensive coordinators aren't going to like Shaydon, but defensive cooridnators in the PAC-10 and NFL will.
Mark Banker recruited Akuna for Oregon State. Banker's leading competition included Mike Tuisosopo for Arizona, Coley for Florida State, and Greatwood for Oregon. That is an impressive list of recruiters!
Akuna ranks among the top twenty players in the nation at every position that he plays.
Shaydon Akuna is a major coup for Oregon State. He ranks among the very best linebackers landed by the PAC-10 this year. If he lived in any major population center, like Chicago or Los Angeles, he would have earned unanimous five star All-American recognition.
